Feedback Surveys: Sunset Review

Organic sector feedback sought on production and handling inputs

The National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) is in the process of reviewing the large majority of crop, livestock, and handling inputs currently allowed for use by certified organic operations. These production and handling inputs (commonly referred to as the National List of allowed and prohibited substances) will be reviewed by NOSB based on their “Sunset” review timelines, and may not be renewed if new information indicates these substances are incompatible with organic production.

It’s critical that NOSB hear from certified farmers and handlers on whether these fertilizers, pest control products, processing aids, and ingredients are consistent with and essential to organic production, or whether there are other effective natural or organic alternatives available. To help facilitate a robust comment process OTA has created a system for collecting feedback from certified farms and processors. This system will help OTA identify the inputs that should be renewed or removed from the National List.

Below you will find links to electronic surveys that can be used to submit feedback on each individual input currently under NOSB review. You will also find overviews of each material if you would like to learn more.  OTA encourages members to take the time to carefully review the information provided. Your feedback is critical, and will significantly help shape OTA’s comments to NOSB.

2019 INPUTS UNDER SUNSET REVIEW

NOSB will be voting on the 2019 Sunset inputs at the fall 2017 meeting. Feedback is given to NOSB during this spring to help inform NOSB’s vote at the fall 2017 meeting and will ultimately help decide whether or not the inputs will continue to be allowed in organic production and processing.
