U.S. organic products find growing markets overseas

 

GREENFIELD, Mass. (Jan. 19, 2001)—The United States exports more than $40 million in organic goods to the United Kingdom and organic products worth an estimated $40-$60 million to Japan a year, a study developed for the Organic Trade Association (OTA) shows.

"It is difficult to get detailed and accurate information regarding export volume and export forecasts for organic products. However, the data that have been collected show U.S. organic exports to Europe are growing approximately 15 percent a year, while exports to Japan are growing between 30 to 50 percent a year," according to Katherine DiMatteo, executive director of the trade association serving all sectors of the organic industry in North America.

This rate may increase substantially, now that the U.S. Department of Agriculture has released national organic standards.

"OTA’s study showed that one of the perceived trade barriers was the lack of national organic standards in the United States. OTA anticipates the implementation of such standards will create a more level playing field for U.S. producers with the European Union and Japan," DiMatteo added.
